STEM Fair: Garbage Patch (Glenelg)
To educate attendees of the HCPSS STEM fair about Garbage Patches in the ocean and the struggles of clean-ups, Glenelg students created a trifold presentation and an interactive game to present at the HCPSS STEM fair. In partnership with the River Hill Watershed Committee, the River Hill Green Initiative invited members of various student organizations including National Honor Society, Cross Country Team, and the Man in the Mirror Service club to plant 19 saplings. To introduce gardening fresh foods to the Glenelg High community, the Glenelg GEO club made use of abandoned raised beds in the school courtyard to plant a vegetable garden. Afterwards, the vegetables will be donated to the school’s cafeteria. Butterfly Garden (Mt. Hebron)
The Mount Hebron High School Environmental Club planned, organized, and planted a small butterfly garden in unused garden space located at the school. The garden's purpose benefits the local ecosystem but also beautify the school and inspire a sense of stewardship in our students. As the majority of waste from school bathrooms is paper towels, which can be composted, but instead are thrown away and sent to the landfill. The River Hill Green Initiative collaborated with the Custodial Staff, the NAHS, and the Howard County Bureau of Environmental Services to implement a composting program in school bathrooms.
